The Plumbline

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Why did God give us the Bible?

The Bible is an account of God’s infinite love and redemption for humankind. God created humankind in His image with the ability to choose good or evil. He established The Way for us to know Him and to have a relationship with Him through His plan of redemption.

So we must begin here to establish the measurement, The Way to walk uprightly before a Holy God, The Way that God intended. We begin by describing the purpose for establishing a plumb line for our beliefs.

A plumb line is a weight suspended from a string

used as a vertical reference line to ensure that everything

is aligned, justified, and centered.

For those that put their faith in God the plumb line is The Bible. It becomes our reference point where we gain insight for learning how to live in a right relationship with the God of all Creation. This is where we learn how to live with a Biblical worldview.

Can we really know that our attitudes and actions are pleasing and acceptable to God? The only way this is possible is if we first establish a proper standard against which we compare our thoughts, emotions, and actions to ascertain whether we are walking in the Truth. If we do not have a proper plumb line against which to measure then we risk missing the mark altogether which, Biblically speaking, is referred to as sin.

We easily observe in society that we have lost our plumb line for what is considered good and what is considered evil. The Bible tells us that there would come a time when good will be called evil and evil will be called good. I think we can all agree that we are living in that time.

A plumb line is not a moving target. It is not based on personal opinion or preferences. It hangs true no matter what.

Returning to the plumb line of God is the first step in in aligning your life to God’s Truth.

“Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you says the Lord of Hosts. But you say, “How shall we return?” Malachi 3:7

We must return to God and let His plumb line help us to evaluate whether or not we are living according to His standards as defined by the Bible. When we seek His answers to all of our questions and apply these truths to our life we will be empowered through the Holy Spirit to walk uprightly in our relationships, our conversations, and in our activities in a way that brings Glory to God to impact our world for Christ.

“And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plumb line.” Isaiah 28:17

“Sanctify them in the truth; Your Word is truth.” John 17:17

THE BIBLE IS OUR PLUMBLINE

FOR HEARING FROM GOD AND WALKING IN HIS WAYS
